Hotline On Call reports this afternoon that Congressman Charlie Bass is recruiting fellow moderates "to sign a letter to House Conference Chair Deborah Pryce (R-OH) requesting new leadership elections in an effort to block Rep. Tom DeLay from reclaiming his post as Maj Leader." Hotline describes this effort as a "quickly-growing, behind-the-scenes effort to ensure that DeLay does not return to the top of the House GOP." Rep. Jeff Flake, a conservative from Arizona, also is engineering the effort.
As was suggested here a couple months ago, the problem with the New Hampshire Democrats' argument that the Republicans have created a "culture of corruption" might be that Bass will agree with them, at least as far as the current House leadership goes. A leadership fight gives Bass a chance to burnish his maverick-moderate credentials.
And exactly how much noise did the esteemed voice of moderation from the Second District make about the all-encompassing "culture of corruption" before Tom DeLay's power started crumbling? That's right. None. Bass is a coward and a fraud. Any weakling can kick a bully when he's down. If he had any guts or any principles he'd have condemned DeLay years ago, when he was in the full flush of his power. Instead he willingly groveled before the Hammer, mincing and justifying, playing Wormtongue to DeLay's Saruman.
